trucker

combined, my driving commute to work is almost 2 hours. the sun is either rising or setting as i drive though the cattle runs of the highway.

and i realize i am developing a trucker tan on my left arm.

....

unacceptable!!

options:
- wear a shawl
- wear sunscreen (??)
- wear my bikini

though, really, only the first two solve my unbalanced tan problem.

sweet as candy

this is strangely... sexy and gross, all at the same time.

it's wick

in celebration of earth day, but also for my newfound love of parks (as madge notes, the weather has been insanely nice in florida), anthony and i visited lettuce lake for a snack and a walk. the light was so lovely with the late afternoon sun. as for wildlife, we got to see a crazy grasshopper, a cardinal and some finches!

lettucelake1

lettucelake2
way off to the right, there's an observation deck.

lettucelake3
note: do not use spanish moss to decorate your home. chiggers reside within.

lettucelake4
cypress knees!

lettucelake5

i'm also going to post some photos of my plants (just for you, scott!). i dare not call it a garden, mostly i just try to keep the plants alive. my dad can grow acres and acres of amazing asian fruit, but i can barely keep my jade plants alive.

succulent!
these are my newest succulents. i thrifted the 2 white vases and put crushed rocks at the bottoms. *roar* i even crushed the rocks myself with a hammer and a dishcloth.
final score: kim - 1. dishcloth - 0.
apparently, hammering rocks on fabric = holes.

plants4
(sorry for the poor pictures, i used my baby digital this time.)
in the first corner... from the left, we have a basil plant, jasmine, thai pepper plant (pillaged by aphids and then by my scissors) and mint (culled from meaghan's garden - thanks craig!). behind the thai pepper is a small sage plant. after brutally killing the sage plant (a word loosely used, for it only had 4 leaves) i had been growing from seed for the past 6 months, i gave up and bought one at the botanical garden show at usf.

plants5
and in the second corner... from the front, we have flapjack, jade, more flapjack, lemongrass, jade, tomato and another ravaged pepper plant. seriously, what's up with aphids and pepper plants?! this one is hanging on for dear life. *sigh* those little twig arms are just so sad.

tomahts!
we don't actually "harvest" much from our garden, but here are some tomatoes! mostly we use the basil for pesto, pizzas or other such italian sauces.

live, jade. live!!
this however, makes me very happy. thomas killed my beautiful and huge jade plant and destroyed it into many small bits (cats apparently like to play in the dirt). finally, it is looking a little bit like its former self.

note: kim is the only gardener in the house! anthony is manual labor for bringing dirt into the house if needed. he doesn't like to play in the dirt. ;)

need to start moving again

college

some drawings and paintings from college. erika and vincent. cleaning out the craft room. hanging photographs.

if i do more, i'm going to hang it all over my craft room, i think. one wall of bright things.

murakami

there was something soothing to my ears about her voice, like watching clouds drift across the far horizon.
- murakami

i heart murakami. i'm currently reading blind willow, sleeping woman - a collection of his short stories. he notes in the intro that many people seem to enjoy his short stories more, but i rather like his novels. maybe i'll reread hard boiled wonderland sometime soon. that book was hazy wonderful. i can't explain it.

this week has been insanely lovely. lots of lunches outside. they make me giddy, even though i feel a little silly. downtown, there's this little park amongst all the buildings, crisscrossed with sidewalks and a few benches. i've taken to bringing a blanket and sitting out with my lunch and homework a book. silly, because no one else does. just business people walking by or sitting on a bench. i don't understand! there's this little park, and they don't sit in the grass?!

benches are for pussies.

though i haven't gotten up the nerve to just lay out, prone, reading, dappled... but maybe soon.

items of note:
* my home is being overrun by library books
* anthony rocked the kitchen, i can practically eat off the floor
* i am about to have the rest of my wine and clean clean clean my craft room
* the elephants upstairs are having their nightly parade
* elation at having cool co-workers who want to hang out

ready? GO. FORTH. AND. WRITE.

horoscope for today:

Pisces (Feb 19 - Mar 20)

The Moon is back in your own sign on its monthly visit, and you can feel the pressure building between your head and your heart. If you recently let an opportunity pass you by, you could be way too hard on yourself. Your best bet is to bring feelings to the surface, as expressing your fears can alleviate some of the tension.

eff, i knew i should have pummelled the upstairs neighbors for playing their music too loud after multiple requests to lower their bass. "i fear i might pour tuna water on your jeep if you insist on such volume levels."

tonight's homework music shall include the decemberists, aloha, sigur ros, mogwai, and the weepies. "what can i compare you to? my favorite pair of shoes. maybe my bright red boots, if they had wings." i am sitting down to write my research proposal. i am going to write 8 pages. this is my goal, however high and lofty.

!!!!!!! i just remembered that i have duck in the fridge from last night's dinner!! yesssss!!! this means my dinner will not just be dried squid snacks. sustenance!

this is not....

oh. my. god.

this is really quite superb and reminds me of this (via defective yeti).

4.09.2007

oh noes

fuuuuuuuuuuck.

what is wrong with me? why do i continue to procrastinate? i blame it on my uterus and the beer i shouldn't have had. hello little green bottle of yuengling, how are you?

i'm currently reading about... oh.... 3 books at once. the lead pencil club, stiff, the genius factory, devil in the details... hm, ok, 4 books. plus a few others. i'm trying to read the god delusion, but i don't think it's going to happen, nor could i get through a massive swelling. alas. they're almost too... strident, perhaps.

devil in the details is about a woman who suffered badly from scrupulosity in her younger days - a type of religious ocd. it's really quite interesting. my friend j and i talk about how we both have strange ocd compulsions, but for the most part, they are under control. at least, where they don't disrupt our lives and we don't need heavy medication. we just drive our loved ones crazy sometimes.

there have been a few times in the book when what she says just hits me right over the head.

"i could not trust that my body would do what i wanted. i was grateful for the involuntary bodily processes that didn't require my input, but i didn't trust those either, as i secretly believed that i could, accidentally and against my will, make my heart stop beating with my scarily potent mental powers."

one can just say that i believe in the intense power of the human mind. the collective consciousness. i also believe that i can make myself not be sick. that healthiness is a state of mind. but truly, i have to force myself to stop thinking about the way my heart beats sometimes.

"it was rumination, a mental image that ran over and over in my head. this happened every summer. i just get antsy when i have too much free time. come june, images would start looping endlessly in my brain, and unspooling reel of torturous what-ifs. in 1982, while the rest of the country was watching e.t., i was watching myself stab my mother."

i'm uber careful when putting away knives in the kitchen when anthony and i are cooking. this is also why i can't watch scary movies very often. not even cheesy ones like friday the 13th or the brain (this movie was highly traumatic!).

"measure out 3/4 cup water into a new plastic cup, being sure not to let the cup touch the spigot, which is contaminated."

i feel like this one is totally normal. right? also, it's very easy to fix, just pour the water out, swish the cup clean and you're ready to go a second time.

the birthday that keeps on giving

don't you just love birthdays that last for... months?

this weekend i cashed in on two excellent birthday gifts!

last unicorn

1 - the last unicorn dvd signed by peter s. beagle himself from mat & amy
2 - a date with laura to see the decemberists!
3 - that other thing in the corner is a jellyfish. i like jellyfish. i have yet to attain the scanning abilities of the beautious madge.

i was 3 years old when i saw the last unicorn for the first time and like many little girls, i quickly became besotted with the allure of the unicorn.
the YOU-KNEE-CORN!!! YOUUUUU-KNEEEE-COOORRRNNNN!!! (if you love this movie like i do, you'll know what i'm talking about. otherwise, i probably seem a little lot idiotic at present. one could also attribute the wonkiness to my lack of sleep.)

but seriously, i mean, look at it! it's personal! it has my name on it! "happy birthday kim!" yay me! my very first autographed item, ever.

very exciting. i almost wet myself i was so thrilled. it was like a 25 year old dream come true at long last!

if you want to get this dvd, the best way to do so is through this site.

"London-based Granada Media has sold more than 600,000 DVDs and videotapes of THE LAST UNICORN worldwide, made multiple cable and satellite deals for same, and sold the live action remake rights for a quarter of a million dollars. Yet despite this great success, they refuse to pay Peter what he is owed under his contract. After two years of trying to reach an amicable settlement, with no progress, it is clear that Peter will only get what he is due by going to court. Unfortunately, there is no way for Peter to do so without outside support. Just about everything he earns right now goes to take care of his 100 year-old mother." (via boingboing)

ah, and the show with laura was fantastic! we drove out to orlando and ended up meeting up with steve. good music, good conversation, wonderfully chill weather, expensive (but yummy) stella artois.... *le sigh*

though frighteningly enough, there's a nascar restaurant there. wtf?

anthony, unfortunately, opted out of seeing the decemberists, since they are too emo. he likes cursive-emo, not we-do-it-for-the-girls-emo. i'm ok with having my vagina manipulated. with song!! despite the inappropriateness of the previous comment, i am leaving it in, due to my general out-of-state mind.

saturday night was spent at crowbar listening to some of the bands playing (city of ships, auto! automatic!!) and then skipping off early for some alaskan tacos. sunday was spent with anthony's family eating a ton of lasagne and meatballs and salad. it was rather gut-wrenchingly delicious and leftovers are already gone!

things that will make my birthday even more complete at this present time:
- a red tent
- massage table
- kidney massage
- 1 hour kidney massage
- sushi
- reisling, or some other sort of fizzy lifting drink
- warm feet and hands
- a fully complete research proposal
